Toenail fungus remedy is there to suffice your needs and there are many of them. So now let us talk about what these remedies are.

Systemic oral antifungal drugs are medications that are usually prescribed for toenail infections which are persistent. An oral antifungal called Griseofulvin (Fulvicion) was the only recognized toenail fungus remedy with high efficacy rate in the past. But now, there are already numerous oral medications considered as toenail fungus remedy. To name some famous drugs used are Terbinafine (Lamisil), Itraconazole (Sporanox), and Fluconazole (Diflucan). These drugs are usually taken for a couple of weeks (6 to 12 weeks).

However, they have the tendency to affect the kidney and liver function. Some side effects like headaches, severe skin rash, and upset stomach may also develop. This type of toenail fungus remedy must be used appropriately in accord to the doctor’s prescription and are strongly discouraged for people having troubles with their liver and heart. The medication must be taken constantly and will only be discontinued after growth of new healthy toenails.

Antifungal creams are frequently used for mild to moderate toenail infections. Some antifungal creams may be purchased with or without a doctor’s prescription. They are directly applied to the affected site. Thus, oral medications are usually taken in conjunction with antifungal creams.

For much localized toenail infections and those that are considered mild or moderate are treated with antifungal nail polish. An example of which is Ciclopirox. This is painted directly to the toenail fungus just like applying an ordinary nail polish and is applied daily for a week. The application is removed every week and will be replaced by new applications for another 7 days. The process may take a year for better results.

Antiseptic mouthwash (Listerine), tea tree oil, and Vicks vaporub are some toenail fungus remedies readily available at home. But no scientific studies have supported their curing effects yet. For topical solutions, some examples are Fungisil, Footspa Nail Drops, and the famous ZetaClear. It is said that topical solutions are better than household remedies. Why is that? It’s because topical solutions like especially ZetaClear directly acts straight into the nail roots.

Recurrent fungal infections and those that are already severe are best treated with surgical nail removal. After the nail is removed, the affected area will be applied with an antifungal cream which makes the more effective as the nail skin is exposed.
