Keeping our smiles in top shape and keeping our teeth for a lifetime of use are just two reasons why we should pay attention to our gum health. It appears that more scientific evidence, though not yet considered conclusive, shows a correlation between poor gum health (gum disease) and more serious diseases such as heart attacks and strokes.
Is it possible for your gum health to improve? The short answer is yes. There are basically two very important factors that contribute to your gum health. Each is very important. I’m speaking about home care and professional care. It will not due to have one done without the other, they both work hand-in-hand. If you attempt to get by on professional care alone, you are headed for trouble. Ask any dental professional and they will tell you that this is true.
As far as professional care goes, you might consider utilizing the services of a periodontist over that of a general dentist. The periodontist has specialized training and experience with gum tissue health and disease. In addition, that is the focus of his practice. Just like there are specialists in medicine, there are in dentistry as well.
Based on my own personal experiences in this arena, I can say that I received superb care in the periodontist’s office – as far as gum health is concerned. This included the quality of the hygienists’ cleaning. I found that the periodontist’s office was able to provide me with quite a bit more information about making my gums healthy than my general dentist provided. In the end, you have to be careful. My dentists did not refer me. I had to refer myself to the periodontist. I’m glad that I did.
