The Glycemic Index And You

Over the last little while, the term Glycemic Index has been brought up more and more. However, I’m sure there are still people out there that are not exactly sure what this is and what it can do for them and their weight. There are a number of weight loss plans now that are based on the glycemic index that appear to have a very high success rate.

But what is the glycemic index? Basically it is a measurement of how quickly certain foods are turned into sugar once inside the body.

When you eat foods that are converted into sugars quickly, you will begin to feel your insulin levels rise because the body has to generate more insulin in order to deal with the sugars. Once the sugars are dealt with, what happens is that insulin level lowers to a very low level causing a dip. This may make you feel hungry again which causes you to eat sugary foods again and start the whole process over.

Any foods that cause high insulin generation, mostly ones that are high in sugars as well, are known to have a high glycemic index rating. Candy and other types of sweets are easy to identify that they would have a high index since they contain sugar. Other foods might not be as obvious and you would be surprised on the glycemic index of some specific foods.

An example of a non obvious one are carrots. They are definitely good for you like any vegetable but if you eat too many, you will feel the same issues as a sugary food. Some fruits can also have high glycemic index levels, probably due to the natural sugars found in them.

If you watch the glycemic index on the foods that you consume you will certainly be ahead of the pack for losing weight and feeling great. This means that you will be able to keep a regular level of insulin through the day. The great thing about this is that you’ll no longer feel the horrible effects of the rising and lowering of insulin levels. Lower glycemic index food is amazing at helping your weight loss.
