What is a Herniated Disc?

Anyone who suffers from a melody of back and leg problems may be wondering if they are suffering from a herniated disc. Some of the symptoms include but are not limited to back pain, leg pain, weakness in the legs, and abnormal functions of the lower extremities. So how do you know for sure if the problem you are facing is herniated disc, and what is the best way to determine such a diagnosis?

An intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, fibrous ring, and a central soft portion. The disc itself receives nourishment through the motion of the vertebrae above and below it moving and “squishing” the blood and fluids through the disc. If this movement does not occur, the outer ring can dry and tear which allows the soft portion of the disc to bulge out. This is what is commonly known as a herniated disc. (Also called a slipped disc, bulging disc, disc protrusion, etc.)

If the bulged or herniated disc is in a location that excessive pressure from the bulge will be placed on the spinal nerves, pain will be experienced. In other instances this condition causes inflammation which also results in bodily pain. When there is pain in the back, it is important to fully understand the origin and reason of the pain.

Understanding Subluxation

The bones of the spine or vertebrae have a specific order and alignment that is necessary to proper human function. When any of these bones are misaligned or out of their proper position, subluxation occurs. In many instances a herniated disc will result. As extended amounts of pressure are placed on the nerves of the spine from the bulged disc pain will persist. This irritation and inflammation can wreak havoc on the nerve and cause problems with normal nerve function.

Symptoms can be one or more of the following:

How to Treat Herniated Disc

Can these Conditions Be Treated?

If subluxation is the problem, then a chiropractor is the one to see. Chiropractors are strategically trained to locate subluxations and correct or greatly inhibit their side effects. Through a series of spinal adjustments a chiropractor can successfully correct vertebral subluxations in the spine and enable the body to heal itself. Chiropractors are trained in treatments that will allow the herniated disc to decompress and heal.

Is it ever Too Late to See a Chiropractor?

Be aware that few treatments – even chiropractic treatment – can make up for years of abuse and neglect of spinal health that many people endure. Poor nutrition, poor posture, lack of proper exercise, and even incorrect lifting methods are among the many ways the spine suffers abuse.

Early diagnosis and conservative treatment is the best way to begin correcting the pain suffered from a herniated disc. And the chiropractic approach is an excellent first choice for extended pain relief and for a healthier spine in the future!

Very good and informative article for the average person. Yes, chiropractic can help with herniated or bulging discs. We see this all of the time in the journals and clinical trials. Believe it or not, it’s common for Neurosurgeons to even refer since chiropractic therapy is an excellent conservative, non-invasive option…
